Early YEars
Jerry Mitrovica
Oddly enough one cannot find anything anywhere about Mitrovica's early years, parents and birthday. However, given that he received his bachelor's degree in 1983, and that the usual age of this degree's recipient is 22, we can infer that he was born in 1961. About the only thing that I can find about his early years, is that as a child, he lived in Saskatchewan.
Education
Jerry Mitrovica when he was a bit younger.
For University, Mitrovica attended the University of Toronto (U of T). He received his Bachelor's degree in Engineering Science in 1983, his Master's degree in geophysics in 1985, and his Ph.D in geophysics in 1991. He has taught at both U of T and Harvard.
Research
One major discovery of Jerry Mitrovica was that there is such a thing as vertical plate tectonics and they have an effect on the earth's climate. For quite some time before this proposition the theory of plate tectonics was widely accepted, but it had never before been supposed that the tectonic plates moved up and down, as well as side to side. The effect that this has on the earth's climate is that it could move parts of the ocean floor up and down. If part of the ocean floor is pushed up, water will be displaced to other parts of the ocean, and this could affect the climate. He has also proposed that this has changed the earth's shape over millions of years.
